Q&AZ: Why are candidates ordered the way they are on Arizona ballots? It comes down to state law

An Arizona mail-in ballot.

Many people have wondered why candidates are listed in the order they are on ballots in Arizona.

Through KZZ's Q&AZ reporting project, we answered.

It all comes down to who won the previous gubernatorial race in each county.

In 2022, Democratic Gov. Katie Hobbs got more votes in Coconino, Maricopa, Pima, Santa Cruz and Yuma counties. So on ballots in those counties, Democrats will appear at the top in each race.

That means in 2024, Vice President Kamala Harris will be listed above former President Donald Trump, and in the U.S. Senate race, Ruben Gallego will be above Kari Lake, and so on.

But it will be the opposite in the nine other counties where the Republican nominee got more votes, even though they lost the state.

In 2020, members of the Democratic Party sued to block that law in federal court, saying it could tip electoral outcomes. A judge tossed the lawsuit.
