Voters line up outside a polling station at a Salvation Army in downtown Phoenix on Nov. 8, 2016.

The United States Justice Department will monitor polls in Arizona to ensure compliance with federal voting laws for the upcoming general election. United States Attorney Gary M. Restaino made the announcement.

The department enforces federal laws to protect citizens’ access to the ballot.

Voting rights law compliance will be monitored in Apache, Maricopa, Pima and Yuma Counties. Justice Department personnel will monitor and contact state and local election officials throughout Election Day.

The department’s deployment of staff ensures compliance with civil rights laws across the country.

The public will be able to direct questions and complaints to personnel from the Civil Rights Division if there are possible violations of federal voting rights law. They can go about doing this by visiting the department website or calling 800-253-3931 or 202-307-2767.
