Former Phoenix Councilmember Yassamin Ansari has won election to the U.S. House in Congressional District 3, according to The Associated Press. She replaces outgoing Congressman Ruben Gallego, who is running for Senate.

Ansari defeated Republican Jeff Zink in the heavily Democratic district, which encompasses part of Phoenix.

In July, Ansari won one of the narrowest primary races in Arizona history. She beat former state lawmaker and one-time Democratic Party chair Raquel Terán by just 39 votes.

Given the makeup of the district, Ansari was heavily favored to win against Zink.

Zink ran against Gallego in 2022 and lost by more than 76,000 votes. He became involved in politics after his son was convicted on felony and misdemeanor charges for participating at Jan. 6 in Washington, D.C., which Zink also attended.

Some Democrats criticized Ansari for taking money from a large pro-cryptocurrency political action committee. She told reporters she didn’t know why the PAC was supporting her, but also signed onto a letter to the Democratic National Committee advocating for cryptocurrency technology.

Ansari issued the following statement:

“I’m deeply honored and grateful for the trust that the people of Arizona’s 3rd Congressional District have placed in me. This campaign has been a journey of listening, learning, and connecting with the many diverse communities that make up Phoenix, Glendale and Guadalupe. Together, we will work toward a brighter future for all, including an economy that lifts up the middle class, restoring reproductive rights, and ambitious climate action.

As the daughter of immigrants, and as a young person, I will bring a unique perspective to the halls of Congress. The issues that matter most to me are the issues that affect young voters, their children, and future generations. My focus will always be Arizona families.

I want to thank my supporters, my family, and my team, as well as the many organizations and labor unions who have supported our campaign. I couldn’t have done it without any of you and I will bring your trust and support with me to Washington.”
