Longtime southern Arizona Congressman Raúl Grijalva has won reelection to the U.S. House in what he said will be his last term in office.
The Associated Press called the race Tuesday night for the Democrat Grijalva, who defeated Republican Daniel Butierez in Congressional District 7. It includes parts of Tucson, four tribal nations and a wide swath of the Arizona-Mexico border — including the cross-border trade hub and border community of Nogales.
Grijalva is a native Tucsonan and a former Pima County supervisor who has held the seat since 2003. He currently serves as chairman of the Natural Resources Committee and has also focused on issues like immigration reform, climate change and environmental justice.
Butierez Sr. is a Tucson businessman and contractor who took a hard-line stance against immigration at the border and also campaigned on a platform to address drug use and homelessness in Tucson.
Both ran for their parties unopposed. But before the election, the 76-year-old Grijalva, who was treated for cancer earlier this year, said this would be his last term in office.
