A candidate for state Senate was killed in a car crash early Friday morning.

Democrat John McLean was running against Republican Vince Leach in Legislative District 17 — which is a competitive district in the Tucson area.

As of Friday afternoon, Leach was ahead in the LD17 Senate race by just over 3,000 votes.

A news release from the Tucson chief of police says detectives believe McLean was driving his car early Friday morning and was hit by another car which ran a stop sign.

The other driver, a 27-year-old man, was not seriously injured and was determined to be impaired at the time of the crash, according to the release. He was arrested and is being held in Pima County Jail.

McLean was 68.
