A Maricopa County Superior Court judge is in the process of dismissing a lawsuit against a voter-approved proposition to extend a half-cent sales tax for in-county transportation projects.
The plaintiff’s notice of dismissal was filed over the weekend. According to a court spokesperson, the judge in the case is expected to vacate an upcoming hearing and submit an official dismissal.
Voter-approved Proposition 479 extends funding for county transportation projects by another 20 years. Maricopa County Republicans had filed suit, arguing the measure needed at least 60% of the vote to pass.
John Bullen, with the Maricopa Association of Governments, spoke on Arizona PBS' "Horizon."
“It’s critical. So this is a funding stream that’s been in place since the mid-1980s. So really it was the catalyst in the mid-1980s for construction of the regional freeway system," Bullen said.
Bullen also says one upcoming project is State Route 30, a reliever to Interstate 10 in the Southwest Valley.
