Early counts show Glendale voters were split over two propositions involving the $1.2 billion VAI Resort project. Tuesday’s special election was triggered by a zoning dispute.
About 21% of Glendale voters participated in the all-mail-in-ballot election.
Unofficial results posted online by Maricopa County Elections show Proposition 401 failing by a slim margin and Proposition 402 passing by several percentage points. That means a simple majority of voters did not support changing the city’s General Plan to rezone a 10-acre parcel for VAI Resort’s corporate offices and parking.
Voters did, however, OK zoning rules to let VAI flush the filters for its swimming pools and water features into the sewer system, and for nearby MATTEL theme park to build lighting that exceeds Arizona’s dark skies ordinance.
