Arizona Republican Congressman David Schweikert is considering a run for governor in 2026.
Schweikert’s spokesman Chris Baker said “several prominent” Republicans have approached him about running for governor.
Baker also told Axios that the Republicans interested in recruiting Schwiekert are “concerned with the current field of candidates.”
Schweikert’s fellow Congressman Andy Biggs, as well as lobbyist and businesswoman Karrin Taylor Robson, have already declared they’re running in the GOP gubernatorial primary. Both Biggs and Taylor Robson were endorsed by President Donald Trump.
The winner will likely face incumbent Democratic Gov. Katie Hobbs, who officially filed paperwork to seek reelection this week.
Schweikert has served in Congress since 2010. He represents Arizona's 1st Congressional District, which includes Scottsdale, Cave Creek and Fountain Hills.
If Schweikert leaves the seat to run for statewide office, it would make what’s already one of the state’s most competitive congressional districts an even more enticing pickup opportunity for Arizona Democrats.
