A pilot program will give travelers updates on events happening on the highway to Puerto Peñasco. AZ511 provides travelers with access to road and traffic information via the phone.

Updates from the Mexican Federal 8 Highway will appear over the Thanksgiving weekend. The Arizona Department of Transportation’s Traffic Operations Center will collaborate with officials from Sonora in order for operators to input information into the AZ511 system.

Garin Groff is an ADOT spokesperson.

“Because this is a pilot program, Arizona and Sonora officials will be looking at how things work with this initial highway and providing information on holiday travel weekends and see if it's worth expanding the system in the future," he said.

Josh Coddington is the director of communications at the Arizona Office of Tourism.

“So we definitely work with our partners at ADOT because travel, of course, is a critical part of a tourism experience. So we work with them and their communications department to help get out messages that are relevant to the traveling public," he said.

Mexico is the largest source of Arizona’s international visitors. Rocky Point is also a popular destination for Arizona visitors to travel to.
