The Navajo Nation is again suing Apache County over what it says were delays in processing early ballots for the 2024 elections.
Tribal lawyers have asked that people who voted early be given more time to fix inconsistent signatures.
Voters initially had until Nov. 10 to correct signatures but according to the suit, Apache County paused its early ballot count from Nov 6 to Nov 8. Meanwhile, 143 Navajo voters needed to address signature issues.
This gave voters only two days to be notified and then to make the drive to the Recorder’s Office in St. Johns.
The Navajo Council speaker accused Apache County of disenfranchising voters in previous elections, not just this one.
On the night of Election Day, Navajo Nation lawyers sued so voters could have two extra hours to cast their ballots after numerous issues like printer malfunctions at polling locations. The deadline for counties to canvas is Thursday.
