More than 200,000 migrants have been returned to Mexico or their home countries since June under the Biden administration’s border restrictions. That’s according to new data released by Customs and Border Protection.
CBP data shows Border Patrol agents apprehended more than 56,000 people in October — including over 11,000 in the Tucson Sector. It’s a slight rise from the overall number of arrests in September — and data shows more families arrived in October as well.
CBP says apprehensions borderwide have dropped by 55% since June. That’s when the Biden administration enacted a new set of restrictions that blocked most migrants from accessing asylum. The agency says the number of migrants with pending immigration cases have dropped by almost 70% as a result.
The rule is the subject of a lawsuit filed by rights groups, who say it violates U.S. asylum law.
