Mexico’s president Claudia Sheinbaum says the state of Sonora could become home to another auto plant. But unlike the existing Ford facility, this one would churn out the first electric vehicle designed and manufactured completely in Mexico.
The Olinia cars, promoted by Mexico’s new president, could put Mexico on the map – as countries worldwide race to become leaders in the electric vehicle sector. China, the U.S. and Europe have all boosted their own EV projects. Olinia means “to move” in Nahautl.
The plant in Sonora would be part of the Mexican government’s Plan Sonora, an economic development strategy to make the state a clean energy hub.
