Monday, Nov. 25, is the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. In Mexico, it kicks off 16 days of activism across the country to combat violence against women and children.

The events over the next 16 days include a public awareness campaign against normalizing violence against women.

Mexico’s first female president, Claudia Sheinbaum, said in her regular morning press conference Monday that in addition to preventative measures, like public awareness campaigns, there have to be punishments for violence. She called for zero impunity for murders of women and sexual violence.

The state of Sonora has accounted for 23 of the more than 600 presumed murders of women in Mexico this year, according to data released by the country’s security secretary.

The 16 days of activism end on Dec. 10, which is International Human Rights Day.
