Dozens of new homes were recently gifted to Navajo Nation families, thanks in part to federal funding.

The Bureau of Indian Affairs put close to $10 million toward the project, which is part of its century-old Housing Improvement Program.

Seventy-six newly built manufactured homes were made available. According to Navajo Nation President Buu Nygren, priority went to elders and vulnerable community members deemed most in need.

Nygren said the move is part of his office’s ongoing 1,000 Homes Initiative, meant to help address a tribal housing crisis that’s persisted for decades.

He emphasized that securing federal funding is still a challenge, but essential for expanding the program further.
