Sonora Gov. Alfonso Durazo speaks in Nogales.

The governor of Sonora said in a statement that Mexico’s government is giving the state extra funding to improve infrastructure in Nogales.

The additional funds are on top of what the last Mexican presidential administration gave the border city. The money will go toward improving schools, infrastructure and security, as well as paying off credit.

Sonora Gov. Alfonso Durazo was in Nogales late last month to tout hospital, road and educational projects.

In a video about his trip on social media, Durazo called Nogales “one of the most important cities in Mexico in every sense, especially economically.” Billions of dollars in goods cross through the city every year.

The amount of money promised to Nogales equals about $200 million.
