A federal data analysis from the research hub TRAC shows the number of asylum cases approved in immigration court has been in decline for months — and it varies from court to court.

The merits of an asylum claim are decided in more than 400 immigration courts around the country — including 12 in Arizona.

TRAC reports the number of people that were granted asylum began increasing in 2022 before falling dramatically with the introduction of a sped up legal process for asylum seekers at the border. The researchers say it’s a familiar pattern that happens with policies that cut down the amount of time people have to make their cases.

The grant rate started improving in 2023 before falling again this year. The latest numbers from October show the rate of successful asylum claims nationally was just under 36%. Of almost 200 total cases heard in Arizona that month, only 38 were approved.
