Mexico’s president has unveiled a new song celebrating Mexican immigrants in the U.S. to celebrate International Migrants Day.
The song is called the "Himno Migrante," or "Migrant Anthem." Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum called Mexicans living in the U.S. “heroes,” noting that Mexican immigrants in the U.S. sent $6.3 billion in remissions back to their home country last year.
“You know that [Mexico] will always be your home,” Sheinbaum said at a press conference. “Thank you for all you do for your families, and thank you for all you do for Mexico.”
The song, which has lyrics both in English and Spanish, was performed by a group called Legado de Grandeza.
According to the American Immigration Council, there are around half a million Mexican immigrants in Arizona.
Meanwhile, migrants in Mexico from other countries — many of whom are attempting to pass through on their way to the U.S. — have faced abuses from Mexican authorities.
Sheinbaum has said if President-elect Donald Trump carries out mass deportations when he takes office, her country is ready to accept deported Mexicans. But she’s also said that she hopes to strike a deal with Trump so that deportees from other countries don’t come through Mexico.
