Amazon is investing $5 billion in Mexico, the country announced Tuesday.
Amazon plans to build a new data center in the central Mexican city of Querétaro, which Mexican officials say will add jobs and create opportunities in high tech fields.
Amazon officials said at a press conference in Mexico City that the facility would employ seven thousand people.
Also speaking at the press conference, Marcelo Ebrard, Mexico’s economy secretary, said that the investment means thousands of people in the region will get training in fields like data science and engineering.
“This will train, empower and give opportunities to Mexican talent,” Ebrard said.
Officials say the investment will add $10 billion to Mexico’s GDP.
