Mexico is bracing for a 25% tariff that President Donald Trump has promised he could put on goods the country ships to the U.S. as soon as Saturday.
The tariff could have a major impact on both country’s economies.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said in her regular morning press conference that her government is readying for the tariff from their northern neighbor. She said Mexico is also in conversation with the U.S. to avoid a tariff.
Trump threatened the 25% tariff on all goods from Mexico and Canada months ago, unless the two countries stopped the flow of migrants and fentanyl into the U.S.
The tariffs could drive up the price of goods in the United States, on everything from grocery store produce grown in Mexico to the cars and pickup trucks manufactured south of the border.
