Advocates urge Trump to consider Tribal Nations when implementing executive orders

A group of Tribal organizations is urging the Trump administration to make sure any executive orders don’t jeopardize Tribal Nations’ programs and services that rely on federal support.

The coalition claimed changes to guidelines for federal funding have left Tribal Nations in the dark about the security of critical support.

Writing organizations emphasized that Tribal Nations are sovereign governments that have unique political and legal relationships with the United States, and while there have been many treaties and trust obligations over the years, funding for Tribal programs is a legal mandate.

The coalition is urging the administration to recognize Tribal Nations’ unique relationship with the federal government, it wrote, because disrupted funds could undermine economic development efforts, and put many healthcare, social, and education services in jeopardy.
