Sheinbaum, facing U.S. steel tariff, says she’ll keep a cool head

President Donald Trump announced a 25% tariff on steel and aluminum imports starting Monday. That includes steel from Mexico and Canada, which are main importers of steel into the U.S.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said ahead of the formal tariff announcement she would keep a cool head as she awaits further information.

Tariffs on steel from Mexico could affect many industries, including the auto manufacturers that make their cars here. Tariffs could eventually lead to increased prices for vehicles sold in the U.S.

Trump already agreed to delay a 25% tariff on all goods from Mexico after Sheinbaum promised to send 10,000 Mexican National Guard troops to the border.

Sheinbaum didn’t say whether she would consider putting in place retaliatory tariffs in response. Trump imposed a tariff on steel during his first term, but later rolled it back from trading partners including Mexico.
