Coconino County sheriff’s deputies say they arrested Bobby Mason after his drone crashed into the Pinyon Plain uranium mine.
The incident started Wednesday morning when deputies were responding to reports of a flying drone which then crashed into safety wires used to transport people in and out of the mine. Officials say the suspect fled, then struck multiple vehicles while driving toward the national park.
Grand Canyon park rangers found his silver Ford F150 truck crashed in the forest near the park's Desert View Entrance.
Mason is facing charges of aggravated DUI, criminal damage and unlawful operation of a drone.
Energy Fuels, which owns the mine, said there was no damage.
Mason was scheduled for an initial appearance on a probation revocation Thursday morning. He also faces federal charges for driving with a suspended license, operating under the influence and destroying area plants.
