Mexico’s president responded Wednesday to U.S. national media reports that the CIA has expanded its drone flights into her country.

The U.S. program that flies surveillance drones into Mexican territory in an attempt to gain information about cartels was started under President Joe Biden, according to reporting from the New York Times. They say the program has been expanded since President Trump took office last month.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said during her daily morning press conference that what the United States is doing isn’t illegal.

What this is is a collaboration and a cooperation,” Sheinbaum said.

Sheinbaum called the drone flights a coordinated operation between the United States and Mexico that has existed for years.

The expansion of the surveillance drone program comes as President Donald Trump threatens Mexico with a 25% tariff that could go into effect early next month.
