Some 400 probationary employees have been fired from the Department of Homeland Security — as the Trump administration’s mass layoff campaign continues.
A DHS spokesperson says the firings focused on non-mission-critical personnel in probationary roles, and the action will save roughly $50 million. The spokesperson said the reforms are happening across the federal government to "eliminate egregious waste and incompetence."
Employees come from a range of agencies within DHS, like Citizenship and Immigration Services, the Transportation Safety Administration and Federal Emergency Management Agency, or FEMA — which provides funding and staff for responding to events like natural disasters or humanitarian needs at the U.S.-Mexico border.
