The Lukeville border crossing is extending its hours on Fridays starting in March to help ease peak-season travel to Puerto Peñasco, also known as Rocky Point.
The government of Puerto Peñasco announced that the crossing into Mexico would extend its hours to 10 p.m. on Fridays from March 7 through Oct. 10. The crossing will continue to close at 8 p.m. the rest of the week.
Keith Allen with Encántame Resorts said the move is a step in the right direction. He said the border crossing used to be open until midnight every day pre-COVID-19.
“It’s been hard for a lot of people because we’re a drive-in destination and we’re known as Arizona’s beach,” Allen said. “It’s been difficult for some people to get off work and get across the border by 8 o’clock.”
Allen hopes that the longer hours will drive tourism this summer, that border officials will extend the new hours to other days of the week and consider keeping them in place past October.
