Roughly 48 hours after the U.S. implemented 25% tariffs on goods from Mexico and Canada, the Trump administration now says the tariff on Mexico would be delayed until April 2.
President Donald Trump made the announcement Thursday on his Truth Social account after a call with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum.
Sheinbaum said in her daily morning press conference that the call was “respectful.”
“We have always treated Trump with respect,” Sheinbaum said. “And, in our calls, he has always treated us respectfully.”
Trump’s announcement on social media mirrored that language. He said he delayed the tariffs “as an accommodation, and out of respect for President Sheinbaum.”
Sheinbaum said she explained to Trump that Mexico had done more to stop fentanyl from reaching the Mexico-U.S. border since his inauguration, and that that was resulting in fewer seizures of the drug by U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
Sheinbaum told reporters this won’t be the last call between her and Trump.
