Data from Mexico’s drought monitoring service shows all of the Mexican state of Sonora’s 72 municipalities are facing severe drought.

The Sonoran capital of Hermosillo is categorized as being in an “extreme” drought, the same category as much of the state’s other municipalities. The city of Nogales, Sonora, just over the Arizona border, is also in the extreme-drought category.

Seven of Sonora’s municipalities are in “exceptional” drought conditions, the most severe category.

The report shows even more severe drought conditions than usual for the desert state. The Mexican water commission’s most recent drought report shows conditions for the last two weeks of February.

This most recent data shows much of northern Mexico is facing severe drought. Sonora is one of the hardest-hit states.
