States in northern Mexico continue to see higher rates of tuberculosis than most of the country.

In data from the first few months of 2025, Sonora, Baja California and Sinaloa show some of the highest rates of tuberculosis in Mexico, according to Mexico’s health ministry.

In Sonora, there were an average of 20 cases of tuberculosis a week in the first 10 weeks of the year. The numbers in the more populated state of Baja California are around twice as high.

Tuberculosis is a contagious disease that typically affects the lungs. The illness can be treated with antibiotics, but can be fatal if left untreated. According to the World Health Organization, more than 1 million people died of tuberculosis globally in 2023.
