The first of a pair of massive prescribed burns is underway in the Flagstaff area.
The U.S. Forest Service planned two large burns for this week and anticipated smoke to be light but noticeable in Flagstaff.
The current burn is northeast of the city and will burn about 500 acres.
The second, larger burn is scheduled to last throughout the week and will impact neighborhoods just east of town.
Some hiking trails will be closed during this burn.
