Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum is in Honduras on her second international trip since taking office in October to attend a summit of Latin American and Caribbean world leaders.
At an address at the summit, she called for integration and cooperation in the region, in the face of President Trump’s global tariff negotiations.
Without naming him, she also called out Trump’s anti-immigrant rhetoric and policies during his first few months in office, denouncing “racism, classism, human rights violations” and the criminalization of migration.
Sheinbaum’s own government, however, has increased its military presence at the border with the U.S. since Trump took office. Mexico’s military has been accused of human rights abuses against migrants multiple times over the past few years.
