In the weeks following President Donald Trump’s tariff announcement, negotiations continue with world leaders, including in Mexico, which continues its effort to stave off hefty tariffs.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum and Trump both said on social media that they had a “productive” phone call.
Mexico hopes to maintain the free trade agreement it shares with Canada and the U.S., but Trump has suggested a renegotiation — as well as significant tariffs on Mexican goods.
In the months since Trump took office, Sheinbaum has been largely successful in negotiating with Trump, and the two say they have a good relationship.
Mexico’s export-heavy economy relies on trade with the U.S. That’s especially true in major manufacturing and agricultural corridors. For example, Mexico hopes to come to an agreement with the U.S. to avoid a more than 20% tariff on fresh tomatoes set to go into effect this summer.
