Sonora’s governor is touting the state’s energy production, as the Mexican state seeks to bulk up on solar.

Gov. Alfonso Durazo says that the state of Sonora has become one of Mexico’s top five energy producing states. He said on social media that Sonora produced 9% more energy last year than the year before.

This comes after significant investment in the desert state’s solar capabilities. Over the past few years, Mexico has invested heavily in a mega solar farm in northern Sonora, near the Arizona border.

Officials say Sonora has been one of the main beneficiaries of a yearslong plan by the Mexican government to invest in development across several sectors.

Last month, California and Sonora signed an agreement to work together to boost clean energy production across the border in both states.
