Wild horses near the Mogollon Rim are getting stuck in drying cattle tanks. Animal activists are pushing for the Forest Service to haul more water to the tanks to help herds.
Several herds frequent the dried water tanks intended for cattle decades ago. The tanks have been drying out over winter, making them mud pits.
“The bands of horses that are in this particular area of the forest that have been coming to that dirt water tank normally to drink, they’re the ones in danger,” said Betty Nixon, an animal activist.
She said she checks the tank multiple times a week and will continue to do so until more preventative measures are taken.
“It’s like stepping into concrete, its clay is very heavy, very thick,” Nixon said. “Once you get in it, you can’t get out of it.”
