Rep. Stanton aiming to get Congress to vote on Trump tariffs

Democratic Congressman Greg Stanton is pushing fellow House members to force a vote on a resolution that would revoke President Donald Trump’s authority to put tariffs on Canada and Mexico.

Stanton, along with U.S. Rep. Gregory Meeks of New York, is aiming to get Congress to vote on some of the tariffs Trump put in place via executive order this year.

“The truth is that tariffs should be initiated by Congress, not by the president,” Stanton said. “Under our constitution, Congress is the one that does all money bills, tax bills and trade related laws.”

Trump’s tariffs bypass Congress on the basis of a national emergency, which Democrats in Congress have called unlawful and fabricated.

Currently, Trump’s 25% across-the-board tariffs on Mexico and Canada are largely only in effect for goods that fall outside the trade agreement between the three countries.

Those tariffs are tied to Mexico and Canada’s ability to stem the flow of fentanyl and migrants across their borders into the U.S.
