The Trump administration is boosting its tariff on steel and aluminum to 50% — doubling the fee on imports in an attempt to bring manufacturing jobs back to the U.S.
In Mexico, leaders fear the heightened tariff will be a drag on the steel industry in their own country.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum called President Donald Trump’s steel tariff “unfair,” saying that Mexico imports more steel from the U.S. than it exports.
The tariff on steel from Mexico, like steel globally, was at 25% after a previous round of tariffs from Trump. The measure that went into place this week doubles that import fee to 50%.
Around 12% of U.S. steel imports come from Mexico.
Sheinbaum said her economy secretary will travel to Washington, D.C., to continue negotiating relief from the steel tariff. She said that if they don’t make a deal, she would announce measures to protect her country’s steel industry next week.
