Drought in the Mexican state of Sonora continues to worsen, as the region nears a pivotal rainy season.
Every single one of Sonora’s 72 municipalities is experiencing either extreme or exceptional drought, according to Mexico’s federal water and weather agency.
Fiftyfour of those municipalities are in the “exceptional” drought category, the most severe level of drought.
Sonora has the most municipalities in that category of any state in Mexico. That number has been rising over the past few months, as more municipalities in Sonora move from “extreme” to “exceptional” drought.
The data measures drought conditions across Mexico, and this latest release of numbers captures conditions for the last two weeks of May.
