U.S. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said at the White House on Tuesday that Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum is condoning violent protests in Los Angeles.
This comes a day after Sheinbaum condemned violence in that city and called for due process for Mexican nationals detained in immigration raids.
Noem said Sheinbaum “encouraged more protests” at an event where President Donald Trump and three of his cabinet members addressed the media.
“She should not be encouraging violent protests that are going on,” Noem said.
But in remarks Monday about the protests and Trump administration crackdown in Los Angeles, Sheinbaum said she condemned violence "wherever it comes from."
“We do not agree with violent acts as a form of protest,” Sheinbaum said.
In a social media post, Sheinbaum said Noem’s claim that she condoned violence was “absolutely false.”
Sheinbaum also told reporters Monday that Mexico will continue to defend Mexican nationals living in the United States, regardless of migration status, and she called for the U.S. to respect due process as it carried out immigration raids.
The protests in Los Angeles came after raids on Friday in which Mexico says 42 of its citizens were detained. Some have already been deported back to Mexico.
