Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum met with U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau in Mexico City on Wednesday.

Sheinbaum said she and Landau spoke about a variety of issues, including recent immigration raids that have sparked protests across the United States.

“[We told him] we disagree with using raids to detain honest and hardworking people,” Sheinbaum told reporters Thursday.

Sheinbaum says immigration raids hurt people, as well as the U.S. economy. She has asked that the United States respect due process when detaining and deporting migrants, some of whom are Mexican nationals.

She has also called for peace from protesters in the streets of Los Angeles.

Landau is a former ambassador to Mexico who served in that role during the first Trump administration.
