Some of the streets in Hermosillo, Sonora, are soon to get a makeover — a very colorful one, thanks to a grant to fund asphalt art.
Sonora’s capital is getting up to $100,000 from Bloomberg Philanthropies’ Asphalt Art Initiative to improve streets in its downtown area.
The initiative awarded the grant to 10 cities in North America this year to undertake projects to improve their streets with art.
Hermosillo’s mayor said in a statement the project could include art on streets and pedestrian crossings that touches on his city’s history and origins.
The project could also include lighting improvements, more inclusive signage and sidewalk widening — with the goal of reducing accidents and using art to make Hermosillo’s busy central district more welcoming.

The U.S. and Mexico will meet next week to begin talks on the USMCA, the trade agreement that governs much of the economic relationship between the two countries as well as Canada. The USMCA is one of the major reasons that trade with Mexico has remained relatively steady in spite of the broader uncertainty created by President Trump's ill fated tariff policy.
