Mexico’s president condemned family violence Monday after the killing of three young girls and their mother in the Mexican state of Sonora.
Sonoran authorities have arrested the romantic partner of the mother, who was killed along with her three young daughters in a town about an hour southwest of the state capital, Hermosillo.
The case has caused outcry and concern in northwest Mexico.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum called for her security cabinet to review whether there has been an uptick in violence against children in the country.
“We’re always going to condemn femicide and violence against children,” Sheinbaum said Monday at her regular morning press conference.
The children killed with their mother in Sonora were 11-year-old twin girls and their 9-year-old sister.
The state Attorney General’s Office accuses the murder suspect of being involved in the drug trade and associated with a criminal organization.
Sonora Gov. Alfonso Durazo said on social media he is mourning the loss of the girls and their mother, and that the arrest of the suspect shows the efficiency and coordination of law enforcement.
“My commitment as governor is to continue acting firmly so that events like this do not happen again,” Durazo wrote.
