One of Hermosillo’s most recognizable landmarks is being renovated and restored.
The imposing white cathedral that stands on one end of Hermosillo’s central plaza hasn’t had a major update in more than 50 years, according to Sonora Gov. Alfonso Durazo.
Construction to restore the more than century-old cathedral has been going on for several months. Durazo said on social media that the current step of the more than $500,000 restoration project will be completed in October.
Durazo calls the building a “historic and architectural symbol of our Sonoran identity.”
The project is part of a state effort to update several important downtown buildings, including the central market and a historic cinema.
