The son of the notorious cartel boss Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán pleaded guilty to drug trafficking charges in Chicago on Friday.
Ovidio Guzmán pleaded guilty to overseeing the production and smuggling of large amounts of illegal narcotics, including cocaine, heroin and fentanyl.
He and his brothers allegedly led a faction of the Sinaloa cartel, replacing their father, who is serving life in prison in the United States.
The terms of Guzmán’s plea agreement were not immediately disclosed, but experts say information from Guzmán could lead to the identification of more high-level cartel suspects.
Mexican President Claudia Shienbaum said after the guilty plea that the United States’ policy on drug cartels “lacks coherence,” noting the United States has named the gangs as foreign terrorist organizations, even while it appears to be striking deals with their leaders.
