Congressman Juan Ciscomani is urging the selection of Fort Huachuca in southern Arizona as a new hub for the U.S. Space Force.
Ciscomani says the Air Force identified the base as one of four locations being considered.
In a statement, Ciscomani said Air Force leadership told Congress last week that it is evaluating site criteria and locations for a new Space Force mission and squadron.
It is not immediately clear what the mission would entail, but Ciscomani’s office said it would provide new space awareness capabilities for military leadership.
Fort Huachuca is an Army installation that provides aircraft systems training and weapons development. Its electronic weapons testing division was recently targeted for funding cuts.
A Ciscomani spokesperson said Fort Huachuca is the biggest economic driver for the region.
