The nearest remaining lodge to the Grand Canyon’s North Rim continued to be under threat Monday as firefighters battle the persistent Dragon Bravo Fire.

Next year is the Kaibab Lodge’s 100th anniversary, and its owner says he’s hopeful the hotel will survive this fire and live to celebrate the day.

"We’ve already been planning that. I think we’ll be inviting all these firemen to come to the 100-year anniversary next year," said Larry Innes.

Innes owns both the lodge and the North Rim Country store, which he only recently acquired. The lodge is just 5 miles from the park’s north rim entrance, and is the only one left after the Grand Canyon Lodge burned down two weeks ago.

Innes shared ominous photos online as giant plumes of smoke neared the country store. About 1,000 firefighters are working on the Dragon Bravo Fire as winds push northeast.

"It’ll be a dogfight, but I think they’ll win," he said.
