Two U.S. lawmakers are meeting with Mexico’s president Wednesday ahead of President Donald Trump’s Aug. 1 tariff deadline.
Republican Congressman Don Bacon of Nebraska and Democratic Congressman Ro Khanna of California are in Mexico in the days before a 30% tariff is due to hit Mexican imports.
In a 15-minute meeting with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, she says they’ll discuss the relationship between their two countries. She told reporters Wednesday that they will discuss immigration reform, including allowing more Mexicans to work legally in the United States.
They will also discuss topics related to security and commerce, Sheinbaum said. Khanna and Bacon both serve on the House Armed Services Committee.
Trump reiterated his Aug. 1 tariff deadline on social media, saying “IT STANDS STRONG, AND WILL NOT BE EXTENDED.”
