Federal officials are warning that illegal dumping in a northern Arizona national forest is posing a threat to potential firefighting tools in the region.

The Forest Service says that illegal dumping at a site intended for green waste like clippings and branches is posing a danger in the Coconino National Forest. The site southeast of Flagstaff is called Bly Pit, and officials suspect commercial companies as well as individuals have been dumping rebar, concrete and trash in the area.

The garbage poses a risk to a Forest Service bulldozer that can be damaged from the rock and steel. Those caught dumping garbage illegally can face fines, felony charges and costly liability. They also warned that if illegal dumping continues, the site could be closed to all waste disposal.

Call the Mogollon Ranger District at 928-477-2255 to report suspicious activity at Bly Pit.
