The Mexican state of Sonora is recording the second highest levels of measles in the country.
Sonora has recorded 87 confirmed cases of measles this year, according to data from Mexico’s health ministry. Sonora follows only the neighboring Mexican state of Chihuahua, which has confirmed nearly 4,000 cases of measles so far in 2025.
Chihuahua’s outbreak has centered around the state’s Mennonite community. Chihuahua’s confirmed cases are more than double the total number of cases in all of the United States.
Mexico’s data shows the country has the most measles cases of any country in the Americas this year.
Arizona confirmed its first case of measles earlier this summer, as the United States struggles with a national surge of the illness.
