As Arizona’s semiconductor industry grows, its neighbor to the south is looking to get in on the action.

Sonora is one of three states Mexico has identified for the future of its national semiconductor design program, known as Kutsari.

Sonora’s governor earlier this year signed an agreement with Universidad de Sonora, based in Hermosillo, to create a semiconductor design center there.

An official from the Mexican government said this week that Sonora was a priority for the country’s future in chip building, partially because of its proximity to Arizona, which in recent years has become a hub for semiconductor manufacturing.

The United States has been trying for years to reduce its reliance on Taiwan for its semiconductor needs.
