Famous boxer deported from U.S., faces charges in Mexico

The United States has deported a famed Mexican boxer following his arrest in California for overstaying a visa.

Julio César Chávez Jr. is wanted in Mexico for arms and drug trafficking, as well as alleged ties to the Sinaloa cartel. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed he had been returned to Mexico this week.

An official in Sonora told the Associated Press that Chávez was admitted to a prison outside the state capital of Hermosillo.

The 39-year-old boxer’s father, who has the same name, is a multiple time world champion and regarded as one of the best in his country’s history.

Chávez Jr. was arrested in California in early July, days after a high-profile fight with boxer Jake Paul.
