The state of Sonora has experienced years of drought. State capital Hermosillo juggles that reality with a growing population.

Hermosillo’s mayor says he’s looking for ways to reuse treated wastewater, as the city continues to struggle with drought.

Even after a few recent showers, the Sonoran capital is still looking at a third rainy season in a row with not enough rain, putting next year’s supply at risk.

“They are falling very short of what was expected,” said Nicolás Pineda, who researches urban water management at Colegio de Sonora. “This is terrible for Hermosillo.”

In response to the drought, Hermosillo Mayor Antonio Astiazarán met with an official in Mexico’s water management agency, which is analyzing ways to reuse treated wastewater.

Pineda said that could be one way for the city to adapt, as the region’s aquifers deplete and its dams empty out.

Treated wastewater could one day recharge aquifers, or be used for industry within the city, Pineda said.
